Abstract

A solid knowledge and understanding in fractional concepts would assist in solving problems related to fractions especially those that involves real world situations. However, findings of the international assessments Trends in Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS) and Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) indicate that achievement of fractions among pupils in Malaysia is at a poor level, that is below the international average score. Taking into account the development of digital game innovation and sophistication, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of digital game-based learning using Minecraft on pupils’ achievement in fractions. A quasi-experiment with a pretest and posttest non-equivalent groups design which involves 65 Year Five pupils in two intact classes was conducted. The treatment group consisted of 31 pupils which were exposed to digital game-based learning methods using Minecraft while the control group consisted of 34 pupils which were exposed to conventional methods. The findings showed that there was a significant difference in mean achievement mark between the treatment group (m=51.09, sd= 17.24) and the control group (m=35.23, sd=18.17). The findings from this study would further encourage the use of digital game-based learning using Minecraft in the teaching of mathematics to increase pupils’ achievement in fractions.
